European Commission approves new geographical indication from Spain
The breed is well adapted to extreme temperature, low rainfall

By: The European Commission has approved as a new Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) 'Vaca de Extremadura' from Spain, according to a recent press release.
The meat comes from the main cattle breeds existing in Extremadura, in the south-west of Spain. The breeds covered by the PGI "Vaca de Extremadura" are perfectly adapted to the extreme temperature and rainfall conditions of the region, as they are able to resist both cold and heat, as well as the shortage of water during periods of drought.
The quality of the product covered by the ‘Vaca de Extremadura’ PGI is derived from the extensive farming system on the dehesa and dehesa-style landscapes. This allows for high levels of animal welfare, as the level of stress involved in production is much lower and suckling periods are routinely observed, which confers unique characteristics on the product and is greatly appreciated by the end consumer on both a national and European scale.
This new name will be added to the list of 1,650 agricultural products already protected.
